About
Student Focus is a program run in high schools around Australia for junior high school students. It is a program developed by Youth Dimension for the local church. Student Focus is run by a team from the local church once a week at lunch time, and involves games and a short talk on relevant youth issues.

Student Focus has been running in high schools for over 20 years and is currently running in 120 secondary schools around Australia. Around 2600 students attend Student Focus programs each week around Australia. These teenagers have regular contact with their local church through the relationships developed by their Student Focus leaders.

For more information you can contact Leah Kearney on (03) 9844 1944 between 9AM - 5PM or email schools@youthdimension.org.au

Benefits
The benefits of running a Student Focus program are enormous for the local church. Working in your church's local high school provides an invaluable opportunity to approach students you otherwise wouldn't have contact with. Through Student Focus you can have contact with up to 120 students per week.

By far the biggest opportunity in Student Focus is to get to know a wide range of students. Obviously some relationships will be stronger than others, and many decide to become regular members of the local youth group through the contact with the school.

Student Focus also has the advantage of an Australia-wide reputation - it is in over 100 schools from Western Australia to New South Wales. In fact the program is run in every state except the ACT. On this basis you have a reputation you can depend on when approaching the school.

Youth Dimension is happy to send you out a promotional pack.
The promotional pack will give more detailed information about the Student Focus program.
If you would like to receive one of these packs, or more information over the phone, please phone Leah Kearney at Youth Dimension or download it by clicking here.

Requirements
There is very little required to run a Student Focus program, as all the props, verse cards and games and short talk manuals are already supplied. There are three areas you will need to establish, however, before you begin your program.

1. COST:
There is an annual fee involved in running Student Focus - $880 (includes GST)
What does this get you?
As mentioned above, you are provided with all materials you need to go into the school each week and run a games program and a short talk. The only things you need to provide are the perishable food items for the day and the prizes to hand out for winners. Each term you will receive a 'Student Focus box' with everything you need for each program.

You also receive full Student Focus training before you go into the school. The training equips you specifically to run a Student Focus program, as well as giving you tips on crowd control, relationship building and giving a Christian talk in a creative way.

Finally, you receive support from the office of Youth Dimension. If you have any problems with approaching your school, or with students in the school, Youth Dimension will always be available to give advice or if necessary to be there to help out. There are two official visits from staff or students per term, where you will be given encouragement and feedback on your program. Your school will also be prayed for by the staff of Youth Dimension on a regular basis.

REMOTE LOCATIONS:
If you are in a country loaction we also cater for you, we have a program that is very similar to the Student Focus program. This program is called Remote Package. The major differences are:
Firstly, There a very limited visits to the program, simply because of the distance.
Secondly, the equipment is bought for a once-off fee of $1800 (PLUS GST & Freight) and the package is the Church's to keep.

Contact Leah Kearney for more information.

2. TEAM:
You will need to establish a team of workers to go into the school on a regular basis. You definitely need one main leader, who will be trained by and have regular contact with Youth Dimension, and then a number of volunteers. We recommend 1-3 helpers, although this depends on your needs and availability of helpers. The team can be made of anyone from a paid Church staff person to a uni student who has a lunch-time free once a week. All the person needs is to have a heart to see young people given hope, through the person of Jesus Christ.

3. TRAINING:
The main leader will be required to attend a 3-day Student Focus training course, which will equip him or her in every aspect of running a Student Focus program.
Each helper is also welcome to attend the training.

Groups
As part of the Student Focus package, Youth Dimension incorporates a three-week 'Small Group' series (run either on another lunch-time during the week or instead of Student Focus on the normal day) which complements the Student Focus program. Here students who attend the normal program can come and share about any issues they are struggling with. The Student Focus program doesn't allow for a great deal of feedback from students, so running Small Groups provides time to allow students to come and speak about whatever they'd like to do.

Youth Dimension has put together a number of packages for Small Groups, ranging from family issues, to relationships, to trust. These are designed to stimulate thinking and questions in the minds of the students, so that they can then feel comfortable sharing their needs and hurts.

Small Groups always prove to be a valuable addition to the Student Focus package, and are compulsory to run at least once a year after the first year of running the program.

Testimonials

Christian College Highton

"I am writing to you on behalf of our College to express our gratitude to your Youth Ministries for providing the Student Focus program at our school this year."

"This program has provided our Middle School students with a worthwhile and fun activity on a weekly basis. It has also given some of our Year 11 students opportunities to serve God and to be good role models for our younger students."
Robyn Maddock
Chaplain's Assistant

Brentwood Secondary College

"The Youth Dimension Student Focus Program has been conducted at Brentwood Secondary College for the past six years. During this time Student Focus has provided a regular lunchtime activity for students predominantly in years 7 to 9. Each week as many as 80-100 students attend and enjoy themselves, with a regular group of about 20. This activity enables some students to feel a sense of belonging who may otherwise seem dislocated in the school environment, and helps build friendship 'bridges' between peers and the leaders or the program."

"These relationships have proved to be important as those individuals responsible for the program have also assumed a pastoral relationship with many students, and act as good role models providing guidance and encouragement."

"The short discussion time during the program allows students the opportunity to critically evaluate their values and beliefs in a non-threatening environment. I have no hesitation in recommending Student Focus to Secondary Colleges in Melbourne."
Brendan Ball
College Chaplain

Frankston High School

"Could I thank you, most sincerely, for your commitment to our students. We, and I am sure they, appreciate your support very much and I admire you tremendously for the excellent work you do."

"Best wishes for your program and if there is any way I can help, please do not hesitate to ask."
Ken Rowe
Principal

Caulfield Grammar School

"We continue to benefit from the Student Focus program run by Dal Barclay and a team from St. Barnabus' Anglican Church in Glen Waverley. In previous years I have had a fair amount to do with voluntary Christian groups in secondary schools, and it is my opinion that the Student Focus model is the most effective I have seen in sharing the Gospel with junior secondary students.
Rev. Laurie Barton
Chaplain

Fairhills High School

"Your program looks great. Thank you for all your work for the school."
Mrs S. Jones
Principal
