You want to know more about jesus?

Heck yeah! We're super excited for you!

Here are some helpful places to start...

1. Reading a bible

The Bible is a collection of stories that tell us about God and who He is - it's like a big 'get to know you'.

Here are some options:

  • get a physical copy from a Blue Mooser

    • you can do all the highlighting you like!

  • download the Bible app (by YouVersion)

    • you can have the Bible in your pocket, access to all different translations, and helpful reading plans.

  • download the Read Scripture app (by Bible Project)

    • a plan to read through the bible while watching different videos in between that explain the context of what's going on.

Sometimes, the Bible can be real confusing cause it's so old.

It doesn't make it any less true, but it can take time to understand.

We recommend use the Bible Project. They have so many resources - YouTube videos, podcasts, a website, and an instagram!

They're Bible nerds who explain context and give structure in super helpful and engaging ways.

HOT TIP: Before reading a book of the Bible. search "bible project [book name]" on youtube, to give you some context before you start.

  • i.e. "bible project mark" before you read the book of mark.

A great place to start is the "how to read the Bible" Youtube series (particularly their first 3 videos).

FAQ: How do you know the Bible's reliable?

How can we trust in the Bible? Is it true? What if it was made up by a crazy person and it somehow just stuck?

We're in a time today where basing our lives on a book from centuries ago can feel a bit strange. To trust in something enough for it to change your life, means that there has to be something true, meaningful, and reliable about that thing. The Bible is the most historically accurate and reliable text that exists, and it's the best selling book to date. Pretty cool, right?

'God Breathed' by Josh McDowell is a book that explains why the Bible is great and why it's trustworthy as a historical document.

Below is a video by the National Geographic that illustrates how the Bible was transcribed over time, as well as what finding the Dead Sea Scrolls meant. These were ancient copies of the Bible that were found and they show that what we read today aligns with what was written originally used back in the day, showing the Bible is reliable and trustworthy.

Historic Evidence of the Bible

Well, what should you read?

We recommend starting with the Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 'Gospel' means 'good news'.

Each of these books is named after the guy who wrote it. They each wrote a letter that was passed around communities, telling them about the good news of Jesus. They all tell the story about Jesus' life, each with a different focus/audience in mind.

Mark

Mark is short + punchy. It goes from story to story and is full of action. He writes to "Gentiles" (people who didn't have much religious knowledge), and leaves the book ending on a cliffhanger. This is a good place to start!

Matthew

Matthew was a religious history buff and wrote about Jesus' life using heaps of references to the Old Testament (the religious laws and stories that said someone was coming to save God's people). He wrote to the Jews of the time, to prove that Jesus was fulfilling all the prophecies of being the one to save God's people, but in a different way than what they expected.

Luke

Luke was a doctor and so was very detailed in his telling of the story of Jesus. His writing fleshes out many of the stories and his specific details are to prove the historical accuracy of the text and to prove the legitimacy of the stories. Many of the same stories of Jesus are told in multiple books - if you're lost with a story in Mark/Matthew/John, try looking for it in Luke for the expanded version.

John

John was a real interesting guy as you’ll find out from his intro. He writes to prove that Jesus was both God and human, using language and stories that God had used to describe himself in the Old Testament, and using them to describe Jesus. John is the most different out of the four, so you'll find different stories in this book than the others.

Extra info on the Bible

So the Bible is a big book, made of 66 little books.

And then those 66 are split into the Old and New Testament. Let’s break that down...

The Old Testament (OT) is all the books that were written before Jesus’ time. They are stories from history, that largely follow God and His relationship with the nation of Israel. These stories show different aspects of God’s character and how He tries to reach out to the people of Israel in different ways, even when they continue to turn away from Him.

The New Testament (NT) is all the books that were written during and after Jesus’ time. Jesus is the new way God reaches out to all people to have a relationship with them - not just Israelites, but everyone. These stories show God’s character through the person of Jesus, as well as what it looks like to live as a Christian.

The OT and NT work together. It’s a unified story that leads to Jesus. Though the OT can feel dry, irrelevant, or strange at times, it adds so much value to the NT - and it’s a whole lot easier to understand when you do a bit of research around context!

FAQ: What's the deal with Bible Translations?

The Bible has been around for a long time and has been translated into multiple versions and languages.

Our go-tos are: New International Version (NIV), English Standard Version (ESV), Christian Standard Bible (CSB), Good News Bible (GNB), New Living Translation (NLT).

This takes you to a video explaining why there are different Bible translations and how to choose one.

2. Talking to Jesus

So, if the Bible is how God tells us about Himself - a way He talks to us - how do we respond?

We pray!

Praying is our way of continuing the conversation with God when reading the Bible and learning more about Him.

Basically, praying is just talking to God.

  • You can process what you’ve learnt from the Bible.

  • You can ask Him questions or ask Him for help.

  • You can tell Him about your life or how you want to live as a Christian.

  • You can get angry, sad, thankful, reflective.

God knows the full story and what we’re thinking, but He likes it when we tell Him things or ask for help. A relationship goes both ways - speaking and listening.

If you want some examples...

Psalms is a book in the Bible that is a collection of prayers and songs to God. They show us how others have talked to God. A lot of them are really honest! Some even start out quite angry, but by the end, having a conversation with God has given the author some perspective and peace.

  • Read Psalm 10, 23, 27, 51, 69, 119 (a long one!) as some examples.

FAQ: What does praying even look like though...?

It doesn’t need fancy words. You can speak to God out loud, or you can write out a prayer to him in a journal

It might feel weird at first, but it’s kind of like a muscle. The more you do it, the easier and more natural it feels!

It doesn't have to be alone either! Ask a Mooser and they will be happy to pray with you!

3. Media About Jesus

Listen to Music about Jesus

One of our friends is super passionate about people finding music in the genre they like, and with lyrics that are all about Jesus or being a Christian.

His spotify has playlists of almost every genre you can imagine (literally, he’s got over 150 playlists), so that you can find a type of music that you can connect to both the words and the style.

Wanna listen to Christian rap? Christian pop? Christian metal? Look no further! It's so good!!

His account is called RawkBeatz or follow the QR code to see all his options.

Watch a TV Show about Jesus

The Chosen is a creative retelling of the Bible stories about Jesus. It isn't the same as reading the Bible, but it can help bring colour and personality to the stories about Jesus, as well as making it easier to picture the time that Jesus lived it.

It's a pretty good representation and helpful in learning what Jesus could have been like when he walked on the earth. AND it's free! Watch it on The Chosen website, on their app, or the first season is on Netflix.

Watch a Movie about Jesus

The film Risen on Netflix, is another creative retelling of Jesus dying and coming back to life, but from the perspective of a Roman soldier at the time. It’s an interesting skeptic’s perspective and the acting’s pretty good! It's even got Tom Felton in it.

Podcasts About Jesus

Here are some options, but there are literally so many! Just ask a mooser what they listen to or what you’re looking for!

  • Like our stories at moose
  • about the bible
  • about being a christian

If you like our stories at moose:

  • Short God Testimonies and Stories - less than 5 min stories of what God did in people’s lives

  • Compelled - Christian Stories and Testimonys - in-depth hour stories of what God did in their lives with some audio effects for good story telling

4. Connecting with other Christians

Don't go about this solo...

We love you so much at Blue Moose and are always keen to hang out, BUT for when we aren't there - we want you to know that there's other people you can bring your faith questions to.

A youth group is a great place to start if you want to meet young people who are interested in Jesus, and it has a similar vibe to Blue Moose too!

If you're keen to try out a church, the night services are typically where most of the young adults will go. Search for churches in your area on google/apple maps and most will have a website that has more info and start times.

Ask for a booklet from a Mooser for youth groups near your location, or tell them what area you're from and they'll be able to recommend some places.

We're always contactable!

Reach out to your moose location through their insta and we can answer any questions. We can't do one-one chats online, because we want to make sure both you and us are kept safe, but we can set up a group chat if you want to talk with some specific team members.

Find an Alpha Course

One thing that is super awesome to do in a community, when you’re first starting out in faith or just want to figure out some of the big ideas, is doing an Alpha Course.

In each session, they play a video (super well made and engaging!) where they introduce a key concept about faith, like:

  • why we read the Bible, who is Jesus, the Holy Spirit, prayer, baptism

Afterwards, the group leader takes everyone through some questions and a discussion, all in a friendly and non-confrontational way.

There’s even a version for young people, “Youth Alpha”, that cover topics like:

  • what is human, ghosting, forgiveness, fame, stress, Jesus, friends.

  • the life essentials videos “Jesus” + “More to Life” are our favourites!

It’s a great way to explore some big existential questions and talk about some of the more unusual aspects of faith you may have come across, but don’t understand.

FAQ: Why are there different types of churches?

Different types or "denominations" of churches will look a little different. They have the same core beliefs but they can express them in different ways or emphasise different things; think of them as different flavours.

One type of church might suit better for you than another, so don't assume they're all the same! The people are different, but the God is the same.

Made it through and still want more?

If you've got heaps of questions about faith and really want to keep exploring...
